NEWS: February 28, 2002

Jason sits in his tower, looking down on the people in the street, small as minifigs.  He finishes his beer, hobbles back over to the pinnacle of 20th century technology on his desk, and saves an update.   Not far away on the Potomac River, agents of the capital city's electric monopoly are hatching an evil, devious plan.   Dressed in moth-eaten Nazi officer uniforms, they sit around a dark table illuminated by a single bare overhead bulb.  The bulb brightens and dims with the mood of the room.  A fat, sweaty man takes a draw off his cancer stick, the orange glow playing off the underside of his swelled features.  He speaks to the room quietly in a Hans-Greuber-Die-Hard voice.

"We must shut down this Brick-films dot com site.  It is bringing truth, comedy, entertainment to countless bleary eyed masses," he drawls.

"Ya, ve must shut it down.  But how!?  That webmaster is too clever for us.  His spies are everywhere!", cry the evil voices of his conspirators.

"Gentlemen . . . he is powerful . . . but I have a solution!" barks the fat man.

A curtain opens in the side of the room, revealing a lone switch with a red handle mounted on a bare concrete wall.  A red sign is hung hastily overhead, and reads "DANGER! POWER OVERLOAD."

"Gentlemen," says the fat man, beaming with pride, "We do have a way to hurt him. A way he has not thought of.  We have a direct line into his house, a line directly to the power source of the computer he uses to update the Brick-films dot com site!"

The room breaks into a murmur, then a cackle, as they realize his plan.  An underpaid drone worker moves over to the switch on command.

"Gentlemen, we will destroy him!" shouts the fat man, and gives the signal to the drone.

Across town, Jason has left his computer on to compile his latest movie.  The firewall sniffs for trouble, his movie editing software buzzes the CPU, and the cooling fan whines Jason to sleep.   Suddenly, and without noise, a bolt of higher than normal voltage charges through the defenseless power strip and crushes the computer's power supply in one swift stroke, killing Jason's CD player as an incidental casualty.

You like that story?  Well, that's why there have been no updates recently, why I am getting a new computer and UPS, and why the deadline for the Historical Fiction Contest has been extended to March 7th!

Next update should be about a week from now.  We will have over ten new movies in the directory and the contest entries to date.

Until then, remember this: when buying cheap surge protectors, you get what you pay for!  Ok, that's not very applicable to real life.  Maybe a better lesson from this would be: back up your files more than once a week!  Or even better, screw Potomac Electric Power Company!  Get your power spikes under control, jerks!

NEWS: February 16, 2002

Two weeks left until the end of the Historical Fiction Contest!

Our next update should have the first few entries trickling in.   Just like last year, procrastination leads to a flood of entries at the last second.  Please remember to send us a link to your movie, not the movie itself.

If you haven't checked it out yet, brickz.net has a huge listing of over 70 links to animators, directors and their movies, animation sites,  and other various sites relating to brick animation.

NEWS: February 11, 2002

Wow!  Huge update today.  We have 8 new films in the Directory.  A few of these are really quality films, such as the comedy Big Night Out and the action / adventure film  NK2020.

Please welcome Jay Silver to our staff.  He will be helping us with some graphics for the site (including the t-shirt image.... why not pick a few up while you are thinking about it?).

About 2 and a half weeks to go in the Historical Fiction contest.   Good luck, and may the best director win Stop Motion Pro!!

NEWS: Feburary 1, 2002

Hey film fans!  Updated a few links in the Directory.  Thanks for the tips.  Please keep us informed about your own projects or movies if they need to be fixed.

NEWS: January 25, 2002

The prizes for the Historical Fiction Contest have been announced!  I am most excited about the Grand Prize for best film, which is a full version copy of the spectacular piece of software, Stop Motion Pro .  Check out the box shot on the left for more info.  Thanks to the generous people at StopMotionPro.com for providing us this great prize.

More new films in the Directory, which brings us up to around 170 movies.  Wow!  Check out the 16 minute Sector 7 under Small Movies.  A very entertaining Star Wars fan film.  A huge effort and very well done.  Check it out and discuss on the forum!

NEWS: January 17, 2002

Several more new movies in the Directory today.   The best one is probably Lego Troopers, a 4 minute film with lots and lots of matte effects.  You will also notice the Shorts section loads quicker.  This is because I have split them up into two pages.  We are working on a redesign, but for now this will speed up loads.

You can now buy Brickfilms.com merchandise!  I am trying out CafePress.com to try and pay for our new server space and site redesign.  I know they are a bit expensive, but this way shipping and everything is handled remotely.  Please feel free to shop around and buy something!  Hopefully we will make enough to actually buy some cool prizes for the contest, as well.  I am also working on a really sweet deal for the contest prizes that, if it works out, will be a tremendous prize.  More on this later.

In related news, please thank Jay Silver for me for the wicked cool logo design for the t-shirts.  He will be helping me out with some graphical artist work for the site.  Welcome Jay!

NEWS: January 14, 2002

I fixed a few links in the Directory.

Brickfilms.com t-shirts should be available soon.  Keep tuned for an announcement.

NEWS: January 11, 2002

Eight new films in the Directory today!  Thanks for all the submissions.  More to come soon.

We are in the process of moving servers.  If there is a hiccup in the next few days, please forgive us.  Remember to type in www.brickfilms.com when coming here, as the brickfilms.topcities.com url will soon no longer work.

Welcome German and Austrian fans!  I have had emails about TV shows and newspapers featuring Brickfilms.com in quick stories recently.

NEWS: January 6, 2002

Ok, ok . . . holy crap.  I guess I should not have posted the need for an assistant on the main page.  I've received about 30 emails from people that are interested.  I think I have my hands full right now sifting through, so please stop emailing. :)

How's your film for the Historical Fiction Contest coming?  I've read about some really cool ideas and am excited to see some of these entries.  We are working on nailing down prizes right now.

If you have submitted a film lately, please be patient.  Jared is just getting back into the swing of things and is trying to catch up right now.  You will be listed a soon as possible (right Jared? :)

A German fan from Berlin sent me this yesterday.  Not sure how many French or German fans we have here, but here ya go:

"Just thought you might like to know that your site and story was featured on the French/german cultural TV station
Arte last evening  (Saturday).  It had me laughing, and I'm planning to view the films soon."

NEWS: December 29, 2001

If you missed it on Christmas Day, Brickfilms was mentioned in another story in the New York Times.  They even provided a real, working link!  Check it out on the left under "As featured on", or click here . That's three stories that mention us in the New York Times now . . . woo hoo!  Welcome, New York Times visitors.

Speaking of first time visitors and others who have been here a while . . . we would love to hear your comments in the forums .  Registration is not required and one of the best ways you can promote good films and film-making is to praise directors in our forum

NEWS: December 27, 2001

Happy Holidays! A new poll can be found here .  Check it out!

Almost 2 months are left in the Historical Fiction contest.  However, it is never too early to start your story off or even start animating.  Prize announcements coming soon!

NEWS: December 21, 2001

Apparently, a Danish TV show recently featured a story on Brickfilms.  I was not contacted for this story, and so cannot fairly comment on it either way.   However, let me make one thing clear.  I do defend the rights of any film-makers featured on this website to make films any way they please, as long as they do not violate copyright or trademarks.  See my comments on this issue here .

Please keep in mind that 95% of the films on this site do not feature people doing drugs, having sex, or anything of the sort.  That is not to say that the films that have this subject matter are good or bad.  They simply are.  I would not list a film which I felt was very objectionable or contained a message I was vehemently against.  Like any controversy, a lot of the rhetoric around these film comes from the fact that people have not actually watched them and watched other movies on this site in comparison.  Head on over to the Directory and check some out, and judge for yourself.  It is my hope that you will be entertained, be moved, or at least be willing to come back later and check out some more movies.  And if you object, you can always let us know!

If this is your first time here, please pop over to the forum and let us know your opinions!

NEWS: December 16, 2001

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Brickfilms turns 1 year old today!

A new interview can be found here .  Jay Silver was nice enough to answer our questions about his film, The Gauntlet.  Fantastic stuff that no animator should miss.

Hope everyone is enjoying the holidays and having a good time.  Do you know what you are doing for the Brickfilms Historical Fiction Contest yet?  Talk about it in the forum.  Let's hear those ideas!

NEWS: December 9, 2001

Check back soon for the announcement of a new film contest.  Get ready for the Brickfilms Historical Fiction Contest!

NEWS: December 6, 2001

Starting next week, there will be some big changes around here.  Look for all kinds of exciting news, and probably an update almost every day until our one year anniversary celebration December 16!  Brickfilms is almost a year old.  Can you believe it?

In the meantime, there is an interesting little war going on in the forums.  When your hobby is animated films, flame wars and fights take on a whole new level.  In a normal forum they would create ASCII flames and verbal fights.  An image may even be posted occasionally.  But in our community, they make movies!  Search through some of the threads here and check out all the little biting film clips.  It's all in good fun and it's an inspiration to stir things up occasionally.

For those that missed it, the direct link to the NYT article is on the left of the screen.  Congrats to all the directors who were mentioned.

NEWS: November 21, 2001

Two new links in the Directory today.  I've also cleaned up and updated a few links.  Happy Thanksgiving!

NEWS: November 12, 2001

Five new movies in the Directory today, including one of the better movies I've seen lately, Girl by Ben B. of Egoless Productions.  Also, check out Amazone by Tjeerd Kamps, a fun romp through a wild jungle set.

In other news, an article about Brickfilms and the LEGO director's community in general should be in next Thursday's edition of the New York Times' Circut section.  Look for it and I'll provide a direct link when it comes out.

NEWS: November 1, 2001

Several new movies in the Directory today.  I hope everyone had a happy Halloween!  Several of the films in the update are Halloween / scary movies.  Enjoy!

NEWS: October 21, 2001

We have also written detailed reviews of the films submitted, which can be found here .

Congrats to all the winners, and thanks to everyone for making this a great contest!

4 new movies in the directory today, so check them out.

Also, Doug James has contributed an article on the mutilation of minifigs for your reading pleasure.  Check it out here .

NEWS: October 15, 2001
8 new films are listed in the Directory today.  Thanks for all the submissions.  Brick animation as a hobby is on fire .  I really can't believe how many movies have popped up in the last few months.   I'm glad to see everyone here, and welcome everyone new.  We have some great discussions going on in the forum, covering everything from special effects in editing programs to compression schemes of various media formats.  You can even bounce ideas for films around, promote your movie, or ask for voice talent.  If you are lurking around, please feel free to post a question or comment on a film.  Trust me, as a fellow director, I know it's wonderful to receive praise or even contructive critism on your work.

Also in site news, the Classical Movie Contest!

The results are in, the judging is complete.  We will be announcing the winners at a live webcast on Thursday, October 18th at 9 PM EST.  For details, click here .
Yes, it's gonna be totally underground, and very amateur.  I couldn't hire Billy Crystal to host this year.  But it should be a lot of fun.  See you there!

NEWS: October 12, 2001

Two new films in the Directory today.  Also, I've added several links to the left side of the main page to show where Brickfilms.com has been mentioned.  I think you will be suprised to see them all.   There are dozens of smaller sites and personal sites where we are mentioned, but these are the main ones.  Some of these I was specifically interviewed for (the NYT, The Guardian), others are just articles or blurbs. Scroll down to see them all.

NEWS: October 3, 2001

The entries are in!  Go over to the Classical Movie Contest and vote for your favorite!

Keep in mind that this poll is not the final decision as to the Grand Prize winner, but will serve as a great way to identify the best films.

NEWS: September 30, 2001

I've finally completed my Director's Project piece.  You can find it under " Quickies " in the Directory.

Today is the deadline for the Classical Movie Contest.  If you are submitting a film, get it in by midnight tonight!

NEWS: September 23, 2001

We now have 4 films in the Classical Movie Contest.   Also new today are two films in the Directory.  Check them all out.

NEWS: September 18, 2001

Four new films in the directory today.  We are also looking forward to a few entries in the Classical Movie Contest.

If you are interested in the Director's Project, let me know.  We need one person for the last minute of Group One.

NEWS: September 12, 2001

Sad news yesterday, as everyone knows by now.

I am extending the deadline for the Classical Movie Contest until the end of  Sept 30, 2001.  If your submission email comes to us by that point, it will be included and is eligible for prizes.  Good luck and happy filming!

NEWS: September 8, 2001

Two submissions to the Classical Movie Contest are in today!  Go the the contest page and check them out.  We are working on getting a third in sometime soon.

NEWS: September 3, 2001

Whew!  Don't you just hate it when "real life" gets in the way of your hobbies?  I finally got my setup working for Sony DV capture. This means high, high quality, and probably another hard drive or two.  I'm also doing a rewrite of my big epic, Vecna's Lens .  And because of this, and also because Vecna's Lens turned out to be a rather crappy title, I'm renaming this animated epic Dungeon Crawl .  But enough about me.

Five new movies in the directory today, including a new epic called "Heart of Darkness" based on Joseph Conrad's book.  This movie is even more confusing than its Coppola counterpart.  Check out all of them in the Directory.

Glad to see the forums are working out so well.  The pop-ups are annoying, but we can live with that for the nice features of the new one.  And if some benefactor wants to come along and donate a few bucks, we can get rid of the ads all together.

NEWS: August 23, 2001

Found this on LEGO's site the other day.

I've updated the Resources page with a  wide variety of valuable links.

NEWS: August 18, 2001

Even more new movies today in the directory, one each in all four catagories.  Today marks the first day we have a listing in the "Feature Length Movies" catagory.  A page long in depth review of TE  by old-school directors Andrew Boyer and David Lennie awaits you, featuring reviews by both Jared and myself.

How is your entry for the Classical Movie Contest going?   The deadline is almost exactly 4 weeks from now.  Good luck!

A special shout-out goes to Tim Drage and Tony Mines, who have finished a commisioned work for LEGO.  See it at the LEGO Studios official page.

NEWS: August 14, 2001

New movies in the Directory today from Thomas Foote, Simon Cooper, and the team of Dave Lennie and Andy Boyer.

The new forum goes into effect today.   To see the old forum, visit the Older News page, which can also be found at the very bottom of this page.

NEWS: August 12, 2001

I've just ordered the prizes for the Classical Movie Contest.  If you haven't started a movie yet, wait till you see these!   Click the link to the left to check them out.   The two smaller prizes are  great little sets, and the Grand Prize is . . . . The Guarded Inn !  One of the best sets ever made by LEGO, re-releasedjust in time for the end of the contest.  I hope these great prizes will give directors that extra bit of incentive to make some quality movies.

In other big news, I've changed how the directory is presented.  Going to the Directory will now take you to a main page where you can see which of the four catagories has been updated lately.  New films in each category will be listed at the top of the page under their category.   This will make it easier to check on the newest films and make navigating the Directory a bit easier.  I've also updated the links, fixing some broken ones and letting you know exactly which ones are currently down.

NEWS: August 8, 2001

Woo hoo!  Brickfilms.com won LUGNET's Cool Site Of The Week for this week, August 5-11.  Welcome, AFOLs!

In other news, there are 3 new films in the directory today.  With Jared helping me out, we are adding tons of new films all the time. Check them out in the directory.  Over 100 listed and going strong.  If you have a suggestion as to how I can make more sense of the listings, let me know in the directory.  Do we go with the ol' Action / Comedy / Drama?  Put more highly rated films on separate pages?

How is your entry for the Classical Movie Contest coming along?  It's not too late to start filming, or even thinking of ideas.  September 15th is a loooooong way away.  I'm starting to work on mine now.

Also, the Director's Project has been updated again.  Thanks to Seth for his quick turnaround.  He filmed his clip in one day!  Next up are Chris Kelley, and legowig should still be working on his.

Older News

NEWS: August 4, 2001

Today marks a big update, so forgive me if I forget to mention something.

First, we have several new films in the directory.  Check out the new films near the top of each catagory listing, which will be the new policy from now on.

Second, the Director's Project has been updated.  Due to some bow outs and reorgs, Seth and legowig are now up to the plate, and have until August 16th to complete their portions.

Third, I hear a lot of work being talked about for the Classical Movie Contest, so I'm really looking forward to entries.  I will probably pick up prizes next weekend and post pictures of the prizes to the winners.

As always, happy filming!

NEWS: July 30, 2001

In celebration of the 100th film listed in the Brickfilms, I'd like to announce the Brickfilms Classical Movie Contest .   Deadline for this contest is September 15th, which gives you 6 weeks to put together a two minute short.  Good luck!

Two new films in the directory today.   Fire At The Pizzeria by David Clough and Tube Wars by Rod Kent.  If you have the bandwidth, I highly recommend you check out the one by Rod.  It's our first entry using Duplo and a cute little film.

NEWS: July 26, 2001

A new film today in the directory under "Quickies".  This one by s-lord from the forums.  We are nearing the one hundred mark!

NEWS: July 24, 2001

I'd like to take a moment to welcome Jared Gilbert to the Brickfilms staff.  Jared will be helping me with the movie submissions from now on.  Remember, we can only post movies that we verify work, so please make sure your site is working when you submit.  You can find out more about Jared in the Contact page.

The Brickfilms Director's Project page has been updated with some changes.  First, Ben dropped out so Robert Thomas is next up to start filming for Group 1.  Also, Seth Rotkin from the pool has been added to Group 1.  We also have a new director in the pool.  Sushifly and Robert, happy filming!

Also, two new movies in the directory today.  It's getting a bit crowded in there, so I may have to change how it's presented in a little while.   But for now, please check out the films of Seth Rotkin and Tony Seibel, new today under "Shorts".

And last but not least, I am working out the final touches of a new Contest for Brickfilms.  This one will go on for a while so you will have plenty of time to submit.   Right now, just think of classical musical pieces you want to use in your film.

NEWS: July 20, 2001
I've added a page that will keep track of the Brickfilms Director's Project.  Please check the page and email me information as requested so we can get this exciting idea finished and add to the table's accuracy.  I will be updating the tables on that page frequently, so keep checking back for any new news.

Also, I've updated a few links.  If you would like to report a broken link, please contact us.

NEWS:   July 18, 2001

A shout goes out to everyone I met at Brickfest!  I've finally completed a write-up about the fest.  See it here .

A great time had by all.  Everyone I met or talked to thought it was worth the trip and was surprised at how much was there.  We had giant sculptures and detailed meets, enormous castles and even bigger battleships.   I saw hundreds of creations I had only seen on the internet, and it was a great way to get the creative juices flowing.  Once I am all unpacked, expect new movies! : )

NEWS:   July 12, 2001

Fixed and updated some links.  Find them in the directory.  Now you can see the movies mentioned in the last update!

In huge news, a generous fan over at www.ozbricks.com has donated some web space to us.   Soon Brickfilms will be able to host some of your films as well as get that bigger version of Vecna's Lens online!  Great news, and worth celebrating!  Mention this announcement at Brickfest and I'll buy you a beer on Saturday at Rocklands!  One more sentence with an exclamation point and I may have to become a kindergarden teacher!

Speaking of Brickfest, I will see everyone who is coming on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  I have just finished a one hour LEGO animation video.  It includes all the films I had access to on my hard drive before I moved and lost my fast connection.  Oh, I weep for those of you stuck in 56K land as I am now.  Hurry up, Verizon, and turn on my DSL already.  Anyway, the films that will be shown on the "bigger screen" at Brickfest will be:

Vecna's Lens: Part I
All Of the Dead
2001: A LEGO Odyssey
ONE: A Space Odyssey
Twelve Bucks
The Thing
LeGorso
Lego Ministry Video
Lego Chainsaw Massacre
Brain Damage
Dancing On The Moon

I wish I could have included many, many more films on the tape, but lack of time and not having a fast connection to download have prevented this.  Next year, I'm sure the video will be 3 times as long.   But where else in the world other than Brickfest 2001 can you see an hour of brick animation?  If you have a movie and want to show it, bring it to Brickfest and I'll put it on the tape.  We will also be ripping it up with Brikwars for anyone who knows what that is.

One last note:  Brickfilms and LEGO animation will be mentioned in The Sunday Times this Sunday in the Culture section.  Those of you in the UK can check it out firsthand.  Those of you elsewhere check back here Sunday to see the story.  Those of you coming in from the Times, welcome!

NEWS:   July 10, 2001

Back into the swing of things, we list several new films today.  A few are quick, and one is over twelve minutes long!  See them in the directory today.

Hoffa is on right now.  Nicholson does an excellent job in this movie.  I don't think he got nearly enough credit for this role.

Brickfest is 3 days away!  See everyone there!

NEWS:   July 2, 2001

I'm going on vacation for a week to Vegas.  Hopefully I will win enough to buy a bunch of equipment and scenery. :)

Anyway, so there will be a big update when I get back, next week.  Have fun on the discussion forum!

NEWS:   June 29, 2001

I'm proud to premeire Part I of Vecna's Lens !  Check it out in the directory and let me knwo what you think in the forum.

Also, we a have a new link to Cool Brick Movies on the resources page.  There are also a few more films in the directory today.

NEWS:   June 27, 2001

Almost there . . . I should have the first 12:50 of Vecna's Lens finished by week's end.  In this movie, we will meet two (actually, three), of the 4 main characters that are the heroes of the story.  Highlights of the upcoming short will include:
  • Scenes from the docks in Dalewind, otherwise know as the City of Thieves
  • An opening dialog setting up the rest of the movie; filmed in The Lucky Pirate, a rough and tumble dockside bar
  • A dramatic execution scene
  • A town fighting off a dragon
  • An exciting fight with a huge owlbear
  • Scorcery, knifefights, swordfights, fisticuffs, drunken singing, pirates, horseback riding, and more!
This first thirteen minutes or so is represenative of the feel of the project, I think.  I have about 20 more minutes filmed, but it's amazing the amount of work that it takes to get the dialog, sound effects, special effects, music, and everything else just right.  So, to show you I'm not all hype, I'm releasing this first part to show some work I've done.   Some stuff will be changed in the final and the whole thing will be put through various filters and be a little more polished.  But at least you can see what is there.

Note that this is NOT the trailer, it is the actual first 13 minutes.  This should be out by the next update, barring anything unforseen.

I've gotten the help I need with the directory, so about 10 more films should be listed soon.

NEWS:   June 24, 2001

16 new films in the directory today!  Check out the works of Ocap Entertainment, who have just been listed.  They are a busy bunch, with a whole slew of films to view.   Brickfilms.com has now gotten over 16,000 unique views!  Congratulations to all the directors who have gotten exposure to their works.  I'm working on getting some help so we will hopefully have more frequent updates.

Brickfilms is delighted to present the first article written for Brickfilms by a fan of the site.  Jared Gilbert has written an insightful piece criticizing the contents of the LEGO Studios sets.  Read his article and see if you agree with him.  If not, let him know (his email is at the bottom of the article, hint hint).

Remember to don the asbestos vest before venturing into the forum.   Things are a bit flamey now, but hopefully this will die down soon and turn more to filming technique.   Or, maybe it will be fun while it lasts.   One thing no one should do, however, is represent yourself as someone else, or use another's name as your own in a post.  I'd hate to have to move to a forum that required registration.  And if you are an active member of LUGNET, you will know what a pain in the ass the new verification system they put in can be.  Please don't make us go to such lengths.  Flame away, but have the courage to use your own name, please.

NEWS:   June 18, 2001

With the addition of seven new films in the directory, we now have 85+ films listed in the directory.  New films today include works by:  Daniel and Tim Nice, Ben B., Chip Worker, Brian Schimke, Stefanie Herzer and  Kris Jacobson.  Thanks for the submissions, everyone.

If you pop on over to Ifilm.com, you will see that they have a new look.  On the front page they are still featuring LEGO films, and one will be released every week for a few months now.  Andy Thornbery's first film has gotten over 10,000 views, and Marc Atkin's film has gotten almost 50,000!

The forum is exploding with activity and ideas.  A lot of good suggestions, including a "featured film" and contests.  Over the next few weeks we will be seeing some of these come to life on the site.

NEWS:   June 12, 2001

Several new films today in the directory.  I have not counted them recently, but with some recent submissions, I think we have almost 80 films now!  80! Films made with LEGO bricks are the new animation king! : )

NEWS:   June 5, 2001

A couple of new films are listed in the directory.   One is by Russ Jensen, the other by Robert Thomas.  Several others are pending getting the sites verified.

The forums are exploding with activity recently.  I am getting flooded with emails from people who created brick films years back and now have an outlet for their creativity.  Get them digitized and let the world see them! Jump on in and join the frenzy!

NEWS:   May 30, 2001

I've re-arranged the Resources page to make it a little easier to find what you need.  There are now four categories to define the wealth of knowledge on digital filming, stop-motion animation, LEGOs in general, and other resources.

The first film featured on Ifilm.com, Marc Atkin's 2001: A Lego Odyssey, has gotten over 13,000 views last time I checked.  My short, Dancing On The Moon, premieres today.

In exciting news, some of the directors that frequent this site are collaborating on an experimental short tentatively known as the "Lego Director's Film".   There are numerous ideas and threads about this in the forum.  The general idea is that a story gets passed around to several directors, with each one adding a one minute clip.  When it's all finished, I'm going to edit them together to create a surrealistic experimental narrative.   Only in the age of digital film and the high speed internet could something this cool be done so easily.

NEWS:   May 27, 2001

Updated and fixed a few things in the directory today.  In particular, the films of Robert Thomas are now available again.  My short "The Chase" is also available.

Thanks for all the positive comments coming through email.  It really makes my weekend when I see a whole slew of emails praisng this site.   But, as nice as that feels, don't forget to also leave comments in the forum for the directors of all the films in the directory.  You don't have to register or even use your real name if you don't want to.  But leaving a comment for a director's work you enjoyed will really make their weekend too.

Expect a few articles and some new improvments to the site in upcoming weeks.  Our staff is tweaking and writing to give you the best brick animation site on the web.  Ok, that's a pretty narrow niche to fill, but we like it. : )

NEWS:   May 25, 2001

Two new films in the directory today, both from a new director, Jason Statham.

In the headlines today, here is some good news for anyone making a parody brick film right now.  Frankly my dear, I don't really give a crap about the book.  However, the important thing here is that this is a parody, and a federal court overruled an injunction against shutting it down.  And, the author writing the parody is actually going to make money doing it.  The argument is that a parody is protected by the First Amendment.

NEWS:   May 24, 2001

Brickfilms.com would like to officially announce a content partnership with Ifilm.com .  This partnership is an exciting opportunity to gain exposure for many directors on this site and a great way to be introduced to the internet film scene.   We have been working the last few months in an effort to get many films to Ifilm, which is featured starting this week in a special showcase.

I'd like to congratulate the directors whose work will be featured on Ifilm.  Check the site to see who they are.

I'm happy Brickfilms can be a part of this and welcome everyone who is coming in from Ifilm to the site.  Enjoy and please leave us your comments!

NEWS:   May 22, 2001

Sorry it's been so long since the last update.  I've had lots of other things going on.  On that note, thanks for all the interest in helping me out with the site.  I have contacted the first half dozen or so people that responded to me and we will be moving forward placing staff.  If I need more help, I'll be sure to call again.

With a few days left, it looks like the consensus is to host films on Brickfilms.  So ... as a preliminary announcement, if you would like to advertise with us, please click here .  This will greatly defray the cost of buying space for the films.

In other news, Brickfilms will officially have a content partnership with Ifilm.com very soon now.  This will let millions of viewers see our interesting hobby.  We also have a new email address for submitting films.  I'd like you to use this email to submit films, as we will have a dedicated staff member handling that process soon.

brickfilms_submit@yahoo.com .  Make a film and get it to us quick!

NEWS:   May 15, 2001

Should Brickfilms start hosting movies? An interesting thread in the forum gave me an idea.

I've never intended to use this site as a way to make money.  Until now, everything I've used has been for free.  But web space would not be.  So if I did host movies, there would have to be a way to pay for it.  I think the most fair way to do this would be to charge whatever I am charged, without markup, to the creator of the film that wants it hosted.

Another, way, however, is putting some click ads up.  As you have probably noticed, there is already one above.  This is because I use a free site to host the files for Brickfilms.  If I paid for space there would be no ad by default.  So essentially, there would be no change, because those two things even each other out.   Using this model, I would still probably have to charge a very small amount for the larger films.  And of course, it would up to the discrection of the staff as to which films are hosted.   There is also the issue of getting ads from someone, setting all this up, etc.  And the ads would have to actually be clicked on for that model to work.  I know I personally am not a big clicker.  Let me know what you think in the new poll.

Did I say staff?  Yes, I did.  Brickfilms is now looking for a part-time volunteer to write articles, look at film submissions, and other miscellanious stuff.  If you would like to apply, please email me .

In other news, lots of new films in the directory.  Check out a very long rock video, a wrestling match, and some flash movies.

NEWS:   May 11, 2001

Brickfilms proudly presents an interview with the creators of ONE: A Space Odyssey and All Of The Dead.  Read the interview here .

New films in the directory today.  Check out "Darth Binks" for the first cool thing I have ever seen done with the most annoying Star Wars character since the Ewoks.

Also, LEGO has opened a page on their site called " Film School ".  I especially like the "lighting" area, which you can click the different lights on or off to see the effects.  I've added that link and a few more to the Resources page.

My sources at The Lego Company tell me a patch to fix some bugs with Studios is in the works, and will be released soon .

NEWS:   May 7, 2001

Brickfilms was mentioned in the magazine, IFC Rant.  This is the magazine of the Independent Film Cahnnel, available on cable in the USA.  Unfortunately the article is not available online.  Here's a link to the their web site so you can see what the magazine cover looks like .

I have begun production on a new film, as yet untitled.  This short will be my first attempt at serious subject matter with LEGOs.  We'll see how it goes.  Set construction and costumes are finished and principal filming begins tomorrow.  I'm shooting for about a 4 minute length.

NEWS:   May 3, 2001

Thinking about special effects?  Look at this discussion in the forum.  Here's an example I made recently with fire effects.
If you can't see that clip, here is a version in Quicktime.

In unrelated news, a few movies in the directory are not working correctly.  These include anything made by me or Robert Thomas.  The ftp server we both use appears to be down.  Sorry for the inconvenience.  By the way ... anyone have some FTP space I can use? : )

NEWS:   April 30, 2001

I just finished watching Lynch's Blue Velvet.  Man, what a strange, strange film.  Though not as strange as when I first saw it many years ago.  Maybe I'm getting desensitized to sexually sadistic gas-sniffing loonies.  And speaking of the strange, two new movies have come in that were so good I had to do an update immediately.  Check out the short "zen" film, Breakfast of Zen, and the longer horror/alien rock video It Came From Uranus.  Both can be found under "Shorts" in the directory.

Ok, now ponder this for a moment.  Can you believe we now have 60 films, 60 LEGO films, listed here?  Maybe it's the gas talking, but I think that's pretty damn cool.  I hope everyone is enjoying the films and all you crazy directors out there feel the effort was worth it and keep ...on... filming!.  Every day I get a film submission in my inbox is a good day for us all.

As a side note, the adventures of Doug James and getting his film on the web have brought up a major point about internet-only films.  What is the best way to get your work out there?  Do you have a favorite free hosting site?  Do you make different versions of your films for broadband and modem users?  I'd like to hear opinions in the Forum .

As always, Happy Filming!

NEWS:   April 27, 2001

With only a few days to go, it looks like The Thing is going to be the viewer's choice as favorite film.  If you haven't figured it out yet, you can vote once per day.   This is not a presidential election, so your vote really counts.  No ballot box stuffing, begs Jeb.

In other news, there are new films in the directory.  Check out new shorts by Russ Jensen, Erik Coleman, and Jason Alleman.

I would also like to annouce that in the next month or so, Brickfilms will have a partnership with Ifilm.com, which is the world's biggest movie site.   Fifteen minutes of fame coming to a director near you!

NEWS:   April 16, 2001

A new poll is up to vote for your favorite film.  I know it's hard to pick just one, but it's just for fun and to see if these polls work.  Vote today!  The poll will be open about two weeks.

NEWS:   April 12, 2001

A new interview of director Andrew Thornbery today.  Read detailed comments about how he made his first two films, who he admires as a film maker, and his close call with hardcore drug use .  Hah hah, just kidding.  We're directors, not actors.

NEWS:   April 10, 2001

Brickfilms presents the second in a series of Articles, Brick Animation 102.   This week we discuss getting your ideas down on paper, building sets, creating storyboards, and other pre-production hoopla.

A new film is in the directory, a CGI short about a LEGO world.  There are now 45 films listed.  I've also updated the directory with more descriptive comments about the film, giving you an idea of what they will be liek before you download them.  Also available at the top of the directory are any programs you may need in order to watch the films.

NEWS:   April 5, 2001

I'd like to premiere my new movie, Dancing On The Moon .   Look under "Shorts" to see my latest work.  It's a short love story set to The Police's "Walking On The Moon".  Check out that line dancing!  Let me know what you think in the forum

An interview with Andy Thornbery, director of The Thing and LEGO Chainsaw Massacre is in the works.  Also in the interview pipeline is that fantastic dynamic duo, Tim Drage and Tony Mines.

And finally, check out this discussion going on in the Forum.  Should the Directory get more detailed reviews and/or ratings?  Give up your opinion and de-lurk in style.

NEWS:   April 3, 2001

Whoah!  Sorry about that!  I have been meaning to update for a week now and didn't get around to it, so this will be a big one.  Here's what's new:

First, new films in the directory.  Check out Tjeerd Kamps' Mountain Duel.  Tjeerd is working on a much longer film right now, so check out this work for a preview of his style.  The brilliant Andy Thornbery also has a new one, The Thing.  Check them both out in the directory.

Second, Thomas Foote has an updated site.  All his links should be working now.  He also wrote an absolutely fantastic Stop Motion Primer .   This can be found replacing his old link under Resources.  Also from Thomas are 3 new parts of his big project, Jake Technic.  Find them in the directory.

Fourth, I've got some rather blurry "behind the scenes" pics of Vecna's Lens.  I've really gotten back into the filming and might . . . might . . . have the first full 15 minutes or so ready in a few weeks.  Anyway, the pics can be found here .  This movie is going to be looooong.   I now have over 30 minutes of raw footage.  Whew!

Fifth, come to Brickfest 2001 !  That page is not extremely clear, so here's a brief description.  Brickfest is a festival held by WAMALUG, the DC chapter of Adult Fans of LEGO.  Basically people bring their creations or just come to see all the stuff others have brought.  There are also contests, games, a giant pile of LEGO to build with, and god knows what else.  This year I'm giving a stop-motion animation demonstration and I also plan on putting a bunch of animated films on tape and playing them there.  But regardless of the animation portion, Brickfest is a whole lot of fun and worth the trip!

Sixth, for some reason I decided to put some self-portraits on the Contact page.  I think because Mr. Foote did. : )

Do you have a project to report?  If you are working on a big movie, email me and I'll feature you in an upcoming article about large LEGO movie projects.

NEWS:   March 28, 2001

Brickfilms presents the first in a series of articles about stop-motion animation:  Brick Animation 101 .
Read it and start filming your own movie!

We also have two new films in the directory today, incuding a nice tribute to Easy Rider, "Lego Rider".

NEWS:   March 24, 2001

Four new films in the directory today.  First we have the aforementioned "Lego Chainsaw Massacre".  Then we have three films from Bredstik.com, an animation company.  Look for them all under "Shorts".

We now have forty films in the directory!  Can you believe there are that many out there?  I hope all the films inspire us to outdo each other in the coming months.  I know I am learning a lot from other director's works.  Camera angles, style, what to do and what to avoid.  Let's hear it for brick animation!

Whenever you feel the motivation waning, visit and watch a film.  It really gets the juices flowing.

NEWS:   March 21, 2001

Two new "quickies" in the directory.   I'm also trying to get a fantastic horror spoof, "Lego Chainsaw Massacre" listed, but the author is having trouble with his website.

In the next few days there will be an article appearing on Brickfilms entitled: Brick Animation 101.  I hope this to be the first in a series of articles on stop motion animation.  Look for it soon!

NEWS:   March 14, 2001

Rick and Steve are at it again!  There are now 4 episodes of the gaysploitation duo from Q Allen Brocka.  Check them out in the Rick & Steve entry in the directory.  Also, we have a few other new films listed, including one on the anger management techniques of Star Wars pilots.

Who will be the first person to get listed under Feature Length Movies?  An incredible amount of work, and no doubt worth an interview when someone's opus finally comes to life.  Will anyone beat me to the punch?

NEWS:   March 8, 2001

Lots of new films.   Check out the directory for new listings by Greg Perry and also Spite Your Face films (Tim Drage And Tony Mines). We are now listing over 30 films!  Thanks to everyone who sent in a link or an update.  All links should now be working.

Brickfilms has also been mentioned on Ifilm.com, Salon.com, and a few other sites.  Congrats to directors who got mentions!

Also, check out the heated discussion in the forum.  Tony Mines, co-creator of All of the Dead and ONE: A Space Odyssey had a run in with the legal department of LEGO.  Read what he has to say.

And finally, we now have our own domain name.  Just tell your friends it's www.brickfilms.com .  I've redesigned the site a bit to reflect this.

NEWS:   March 4, 2001

Hello Everyone!  Well, it was an inspiring trip, but I'm back.  There are new films listed in the directory as you would expect.  I'm waiting on the confirmation of links from some directors before adding a few more as well.   So, what's new?

Brickfilms was mentioned in the British Newspaper, The Guardian. Go here for the story.

Also, there are several more interviews coming down the pipeline, so our hobby will get some great exposure.

Please note: The contest has been postponed.

NEWS:   January 29, 2001
Well, I'm off to Kathmandu for a month.  So if I don't answer an email or list a film submission, that's why.  I have some great plans for the site when I get back, including a "shorts" film contest.

Take care everyone, and have fun with the directory.

Happy filming!

NEWS:   January 23, 2001
Lots of news!

First, two new films in the directory.  This brings the total up to 26 films.  Who knew there were so many LEGO movies?

Second, Brickfilms will be appearing in the news again, this time in the Tech section of The Guardian , which comes out Thursdays.  Look for it in the upcoming weeks. . .

Third, a lot of people have inquired that some movies are not downloading/streaming correctly.  I went back and checked all the links, and all but All Of The Dead were working properly on 3 different computers running different operating systems and browsers. Please make sure you have the Realvideo/Quicktime/Windows Media Player plugins installed and working properly.  Someday streaming video over the internet will be as easy as watching TV, but we are not there yet.  The sites are up, you might just have to tweak, unfortunately.  I don't know what happened to Tim Drage and All Of The Dead.  I might have to remove the movie if the site does not come back up or get forwarded somewhere else.

Fourth, I'm making great headway in my next film, Vecna's Lens.  Sets are being created, filmed, and torn down.  Dragons roar.  Magic spews forth.  Swords clang.  One thing I still need, however, are voice actors.  Three major parts have been cast, leaving a major part still, 2 smaller parts, and many one liners.  Would anyone like to read for a part?  Contact me .

Fifth, I'm working on a content partnership with a major online film site, but have not really had a chance to talk to the right people yet, and am a bit time poor right now.  More on that later, I'm sure.

And last, but not least, I'm leaving the country for a month.  In all of Februrary, I'll be trekking in Nepal.  What this means is that Brickfilms will probably not be updated from Janurary 29th to March 1st, unless I find an assistant webmaster in the next week.   The site will obviously still be here, but let's hope my provider does not do anything weird.

NEWS:   January 18, 2001
A new film is listed in the directory, "The Funhouse".  Check it out. . .

In other news, it looks like my next film, Vecna's Lens, will be upwards of an hour long.  I have an almost finished script and am looking for people to voice act some of the roles.  I have a few major characters cast already, but need committed voice acting on a few more, as well as dozens of small parts.  If you are interested in a part, email me. with the subject "voice acting".

Things are coming along nicely here.  A few more reporters have contacted me for interviews, so our hobby is getting some great exposure.  Many of the directors listed in the film directory are working on bigger, better, badder projects right now.  I think the next 6 months will see an awesome amount of quality films.  But with big films come frustrations, writer's block, and even the occasional creative breakthrough.   If you need some support or have an inspiring story to share, email me or talk about it in the forum.  Don't be afraid to ask for help or share your insight with everyone.  That's what this site is all about.

NEWS:   January 15, 2001

I am interviewing a director and will have an interview posted in the next week.
