THE LEGO GROUP SELECTS NETDEVIL TO CREATE BRANDED MMOG

The LEGO® Group today announced it has commenced a working relationship with NetDevil® to develop a massively multiplayer online gaming experience to further engage its dedicated and active community.

“As children around the world continue to spend more time online we are developing new and engaging ways for them to interact with our brand,” said Lisbeth Valther Pallesen, Executive Vice President, Community, Education and Direct Division LEGO Group. “The LEGO brand represents construction, creativity and problem solving – values that compliment the MMOG market. By merging the online world of social interaction with physical play, the LEGO brand is providing new experiences for children, as well as fans. NetDevil’s technological capability, openness to work with a large community, and their enthusiasm for the LEGO brand made them a natural partner.”

“Playing with LEGO bricks and developing online worlds are both creative activities. To bring them together is deeply professionally satisfying and we look forward to working with the LEGO team,” said Scott Brown, President of NetDevil.

Unfortunately, it will probably have a monthly fee.
That is cool though. Hopefully it'll support Mac OS X, and allow users to create enormous buildings, a la blockland.

It looks quite interesting. I wonder what it's going to be like, though. If it's like the graphics on that picture, then it'd be lovely.

I love when big companies steal small companies ideas, it makes me fell warm and fuzzy inside.

Lego was considering making Blockland an official Lego game at one point in time. Guess they have other ideas now...

Coolness. However, there are a lot of MMO's I would pay to play before this, that is if I had the time and money to throw at one.

I was excited when I first read this in my news feeds... for about 12 seconds, then I realized any officially sanctioned LEGO MMO would be excessively dumbed down for the sake of the lil' kids and offer so very little to anyone over the age of 8. things like Interaction and communication will probably be very restrictive and controlled, for the sake of protecting the kids.
This is a legitimate thing for LEGO to do, their toys are designed for that market. I'm not attacking them on this basis.
But it would have been fun to have something more open and sophisticated with the LEGO style, like second life meets the SIMS crossbred with some fully developed MMORPG elements.

Honestly I'm surprised they're even working with a company with "devil" in their name. their biggest market is surely the US, and we all know how rabid and reactionary certain groups are over there about stuff like that ;)

I just drooled on this page. What they might do is have a unpaid version, then a paid version for members who want more.

Blunty has a point there... Lets just hope it doesn't turn out that way. :P
Looks pretty sweet. It'd suck if you couldn't be a ninja though.

In any case, I've signed on for updates and - hopefully - a beta invite when they're ready for feedback.

There is nothing wrong with MMO(RPG?)s but there are already thousands of them free and retail, why do we need another one? I have played a lego-like game called blockland for quite a long time now, and it was great fun. Blockand just came out for retail, and when it did the format of the blocks changed so that it didn't look like lego (Legal Issues) anymore... Guess what is coming out? A lego MMOG. Sounds fishy to me. I don't think that the lego game will be to dumbed down, if it is at the same level as their lego starwars series then it should be cool. I better get to chat though, that is half the point of an online multi player game.

Anyway, I am quite interested in this, but I just wish that lego would drop the video games and start making more lego. The last couple years of lego hasn't impressed me at all. I think it is the obvious link of more videogames and less lego. Although, this years lego lineup looks great.
