Finding the Best Educational Toys for Kids

Contrary to popular belief, the best educational toys are not videos you just plop your kids in front of to watch. Instead, the best educational toys are ones that are highly interactive and encourage your children to participate and learn. In order to be most effective, it is best to try to find toys with specific target age groups, like “ages 3 and up” or “ages 4 to 6.” Younger children may appreciate simple matching games, which are good for cognitive skills. There are many card sets featuring popular children’s characters geared specifically towards your child. Such card sets can also be used for card games like go fish and crazy 8’s when your children get older.

Crayons, markers, colored pencils, and coloring books can also be excellent educational toys. They encourage creativity by leaving much of the activity and outcome up to the child. There is no right or wrong way to color. By providing only a simple outline, the child is free to fill in the rest of the picture any way they would like. The simple yet enriching act of coloring and drawing can be enjoyed by kids of all ages. Best of all, coloring activities can be enjoyed in groups and used as a part of larger group projects.

Another popular type of educational toys are board games like Candyland, Monopoly (the kid’s version), and Chutes and Ladders, just to name a few. Such board games can encourage critical thinking and fair play. Group play with these games can help kids become more social, friendly, and learn to work well in groups and as part of a team. Some games, like Hi-Ho Cherry-o and games that have dice-based movement, can help kids with their counting and math skills. Thanks to the wide variety of educational games, kids can have fun and learn at the same time.
