Steps to Write the Best Film Reviews

Many people think that writing film reviews is a piece of cake. However, this isn’t really the case. Writing good film reviews requires proper research and a good amount of time investment. The first step in writing good film reviews is to actually watch the film you want to review in its entirety. Take notes as necessary, and watch the movie more than once if needed. Write down the things that you notice grab your attention and why. Feel free to use the “pause” feature, if available, so you can take notes as your own pace without fear of missing parts of the movie.

After you have viewed the movie and taken notes, write a small summary. Keep in mind, though, that this should only be a small part of your film reviews. The rest of your film review should focus on a critical analysis and critique of the movie. Avoid spoilers at all costs; don’t reveal any plot points that could ruin the film. Use your own opinions and thoughts, and then back them up with themes and other elements from the movie. In other words, make your position regarding the film clear, then use examples straight from the movie to support your point.

Lastly, make sure you practice the art of writing good film reviews. Hone your personal technique and work on getting your own style by writing reviews as often as possible. Make sure you get practice writing both positive and negative reviews. It would be a good idea to watch movies you’d never consider watching, and then write reviews for them. Or, for a small change of pace, you can watch some of your favorite movies to see how they hold up to a critical analysis. You could be quite surprised by what you discover.
