Understanding Horror Films And Their History: Something Special For Every Generation

Just as it is fun to watch the newest and the latest in horror films, it can be fun to sit back and watch the older films and laugh at what used to be considered scary. There is no doubt about it, with technology changing and our appetite for thrillers growing, horror films have adapted to the times. This means that what is featured today, as an excellent scare is not what would have been done back when these films first saw daylight. The first sightings of any sort of supernatural event was back in the late eighteen nineties in which the scary images where nothing more then silent shorts. These would mark a new chapter in film work and what the audience would soon crave more of.

A Shift In The Scare

In the earlier movies, creatures such as Dracula, mummies, and Frankenstein dominated the horror films. But when technology made a turn in the nineteen fifties, the scary movies concentrated more on science fiction then the previous gothic scenes. This was probably the time frame that had the most low budget films running but that did not faze movie patrons. Instead, the overload of science fiction made the audience scream in fright for more. The nineteen sixties was also the time when some of the most influential movies came out. Even though these movies would barely cause a flinch in someone, they have a lot to do with the movies we see now.

Recent Times

Over the past several years, horror films have made a change once again. Moving away from the themes of the past, there has been an explosion in graphic and often disturbing violence that resembles much of what came out during the low budget craze from the seventies. It seems that a lot of the horror movies that have come out recently are about extreme torture of traumatic events. And while this may seem to be upsetting for some, it just goes to show that the target audience is shifting in what they do and do not like. With the many different types of horror films produced through the years, there is sure to be something for everyone whether it is science fiction or extreme fright.
